Interview with Christian Byrne, Founder & CEO of Polo Valley Sotogrande

The Origins of Polo Valley – From a Childhood Dream to a Global Legacy

Interview with Christian Byrne

Good morning, Christian. Thank you for joining us, and congratulations on the exciting new developments at Polo Valley. The project has attracted international attention – both for its pioneering approach to polo and for the way it’s redefining lifestyle and hospitality in southern Spain.

How did your passion for horses begin, and how did the idea of Polo Valley come to life?

I’ve always loved horses. As a child, I dreamed of being a cowboy – I watched every western film I could find and imagined galloping across open plains with a sense of freedom and adventure.

But growing up, riding was often considered a “girly” thing to do, so I threw myself into the usual sports – rugby, tennis, hockey, anything competitive. I always loved sport and, if I don’t mind saying, was a fairly good sportsman.

My real journey with horses began when I was just seven years old. A few years later, my father took me for my first polo lesson – and from that moment, I was completely captivated. Not only by the sport itself, but by the bond it creates between horse and rider.

There’s nothing like it – galloping on a powerful, well-trained horse, moving as one, with purpose and precision. It’s pure freedom. And polo adds another layer: teamwork. Like rugby, you have to trust your teammates, communicate, and work together toward something greater.

Over the years, I realised polo – and equestrian life in general – offers something much deeper than competition. It’s a way of life. I once heard someone say, “being in the stables is good for the soul” – and it’s true. Having your morning coffee in the barn, watching the routine unfold, hearing the horses breathe – it’s magical.

That’s where the idea for Polo Valley was born: from a love of nature, horses, and the outdoors, and a desire to share that magic with others.

Looking back, what were the defining influences; personal, professional, and familial – that led you to create Polo Valley as it exists today?

When I was 21, after graduating, I was working in asset management in London. Before settling into that path, I wanted to travel – to do something that really meant something to me. So I saved up and bought a one-way ticket to Argentina.

I had arranged to work on polo ranches, helping with anything that needed doing – feeding horses, mucking out, fetching supplies, assisting the grooms – anything to be close to the sport. I stayed for nine months, and it changed my life.

Argentina gave me clarity. I saw a gap in the market – the opportunity to create a world-class experience and place that made the sport accessible without losing its soul. So I came back to Sotogrande with a dream: to build that place.

I was incredibly fortunate to have the support and guidance of my father, Rory Byrne, whose own entrepreneurial journey left a lasting mark on the world of luxury travel. As the founder of Powder Byrne, he revolutionised skiing in the 1980s – making what was once an exclusive sport more accessible, while setting new standards in personal service and attention to detail.

He was later recognised as The Independent’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and growing up, I saw firsthand the power of vision, persistence, and genuine hospitality.

From him, I learned that true luxury isn’t about excess – it’s about care, precision, and delivering experiences that people never forget. Those principles are woven into the DNA of Polo Valley.

We started small – renting a 4-hectare farm in Casares – and built everything from the ground up. Ten years later, Polo Valley now spans more than 100 hectares and has become a recognised name around the world.

What makes Polo Valley different from traditional polo clubs or equestrian centres?

Many people write off horses and polo because they see it as too exclusive – or simply because they don’t know how to ride. I wanted to change that.

My vision was to open the doors to a world that had always seemed out of reach – to create a place where anyone could experience polo and riding safely, guided by professionals who care deeply about the horses and the experience. A place where complete beginners could feel the same exhilaration that has captivated players for generations.

From the beginning, our goal was to do things differently – to combine authenticity, accessibility, and excellence. And I believe we’ve achieved that.

In ten years, Polo Valley has grown from a small idea into one of Europe’s leading equestrian destinations. What began as a personal dream has become a global brand that stays true to its values: At Polo Valley, everything we do is driven by a pursuit of excellence – delivering world-class service, precision in every detail, and an authentic expression of polo and the lifestyle that defines it.

For someone visiting Polo Valley for the first time, what kind of experience can they expect?

It’s something truly unforgettable. Imagine waking up surrounded by nature, just 65 steps from our main stables, listening to the gentle sound of horses grazing and breathing in the fresh Andalusian air.

From the very first moment, our dedicated team makes you feel part of something special. There’s an instant sense of peace – like time slows down. You’re introduced to your coach, meet your horse, and begin your journey at your own rhythm.

For some, it’s the thrill of learning something completely new; for others, it’s a reconnection with nature and with themselves. But what everyone feels is the same – a profound sense of freedom and authenticity that Polo Valley inspires.

We don’t just offer polo or riding – we offer a lifestyle. From traditional Argentinian asados by the stables or down by the lake, to yoga and pilates at sunrise or sunset. From cold beers shared after exhilarating chukkas, to watching the fields being watered as the ducks wander by.

Every moment is designed to remind you how good it feels to slow down, breathe, and simply live in the present.

The horses clearly play a central role in everything you do. How do you ensure they remain at the heart of Polo Valley’s philosophy?

At Polo Valley, we know that the ponies are far more than just horses – they’re teammates, partners, and the very heart of the game.

Each horse is carefully selected for its temperament, sensitivity, and athletic ability. Every day, our team provides tailored care – from individual training and rest schedules to proper nutrition, regular vet checks, and plenty of time out in the open fields.

Happy horses make happy riders. They are not just athletes; they are the soul of Polo Valley. Without them, Polo Valley simply wouldn’t exist.

Our membership and livery programmes follow that same philosophy – giving owners the peace of mind that their horses are in expert hands, and part of a community that values care, connection, and excellence.

You’ve recently announced an exciting new project: The Hills by Polo Valley. What can you tell us about it?

Today, that same vision continues to evolve. We recently launched The Hills by Polo Valley, a €320 million development in San Roque that represents the next step in our journey – a fusion of polo, living, hospitality, and nature.

It’s not just a project; it’s a statement about what Sotogrande and southern Spain can be – a place where luxury and lifestyle meet authenticity and natural beauty. It’s incredibly rewarding to be building something of this scale and impact in the place I grew up and love.

At Polo Valley, everything still comes back to the same purpose: to share the magic of this lifestyle – world-class service, meaningful connection, and a deep respect for nature and tradition – while creating experiences that make people feel truly alive.

Finally, what does the future hold for Polo Valley and for you personally?

Our goal is to continue growing responsibly- to keep setting new standards in polo and lifestyle while staying true to our roots.

Polo Valley has always been about more than horses or sport – it’s about connection, craftsmanship, and community. As we expand, we want to ensure that every guest, every rider, and every horse feels the same sense of wonder I did during that very first polo lesson.

For me personally, it’s about preserving that magic – continuing to build spaces and experiences that bring people closer to nature, to the sport, and to something real.
